Scoop the poop/Walk-caminata 01.05.2011

Did you read the letter written by my MKP-Brother who is dying from cancer?

Thank you Sue for bringing along the article you read about the dog poop in RTN.
I am taking the trouble to type part of it on this walking blog and it goes like this:

" In the town of Hernani, not far from San Sebastian, failure to scoop doggie poop is a risky business. The town council has introduced a bylaw that makes pet DNA registration mandatory prior to a municipal dog census aimed at keeping the streets clean as a whistle.
Teams will patrol the streets of the town and collect evidence to be sent to the Basque university (specialized in DNA testing) for analysis, linking the doggy doo to the naughty owners responsible for their dogs fouling public walkways. Owners found guilty through the matching DNA system will be fined 300 €, with fines of similar levels applicable for failing to register a pet."

My question is now: Who is going to pay me 300 € as a compensation for the fact that I picked up the plastic bag with poo on the parking lot of Font Salada?

There has been a forest fire in Benigembla, caused by a not very prudent resident. I think it is wise to go and have a look at the damage and therefore I will walk this coming Sunday 01.05.2011 in Benigembla. We will start from bar Bonaire at 10.00.
Bring your red banners and flags because that Sunday it is the First of May.

Un abrazo de Bruno

A brother fighting for his life

Friends,

If you are a follower of my blogs, if you know me a bit, if we have been talking together, you also know that being a New Warrior in the ManKindProject means a lot to me.
Today I received an email from a Brother who is fighting his battles against cancer.
He has been told three months ago, he had three months to go.
I have read his message and reread it. It is so beautiful, so life giving, so full of love that I am offering you the possibility to know how my fighting MKP-Brother is feeling right now. He is teaching me quite a lesson. I am asking myself if there is anything more important to be taught than what he is teaching me right here.

If you are willing to help my MKP-Brother in his battle with cancer, you can contribute whatever sum of money to his very expensive treatment. Send me an email and I will send you the information.

Read his letter now.

Men, I confess that when I started to read the beautiful piece that was put out, I felt some anger.

We talk so eloquently about 'death' most of us. And why not? Most of us, I'm glad to say, have had enough of Life to see and feel, to KNOW, the Beauty of it. The sheer Splendour.

Some of us are lucky enough to have a personal relationship with 'that within us all', that which Created us, that which sustains us. That part of us, that inside of us that IS, WAS, and ALWAYS WILL BE.

So of course we're not afraid of death. How can it be 'bad', when something so beautiful, so loving, so magnificently powerful, strong and tender created us with such genius, and death is something that happens to all of us?

So, sure, I'm not afraid of death.

DEATH.

DEATH and DYING

DYING.

DYING.................

Now that's another matter. In our insulated from the real world plastic life of modern times, what do we Warriors know of dying? These days we fight our battles on a carpet, and the word 'SAFETY' is always there at the ready. I'm not belittling the battles we fight. In many ways they are harder and tougher than those of our forebears. And for sure they require courage in large measure. But.

Not many generations ago we fought our battles out in the open, in fields. Our battles STANK. They stank of blood, gore and guts. Blood, piss and shit. And the noise afterwards was that of screaming and moaning. Men, grown men, screaming for their mothers as they tried in disbelief to put their guts back in to their stomachs.

Death, that which happens AFTER WE DIE, IS ONE THING. Gibran, a true Master and Devotee, wrote, "And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?" See attachment for something truly beautiful and profound on the subject.

I am not afraid of death, but I AM afraid of dying.

BIG TIME.

Dying early, with so much left to do.

Pain, unbelievable pain, for hours and hours. Drugged up consciousness, a lack of clarity. How can I meditate on that beauty within when I'M SCREAMING MY FUCKING HEAD OFF?

So much left to do, so many opportunities lost.

The loss of independance. Watching others around me doing things 'on my behalf' that I don't want doing, and I cannot raise the strength to let my will be known. Dependency. Vulnerability.

And the not knowing. How much will it hurt? How long for?

Will I see these new leaves, so beautiful in this spring I was told three months ago I would never see..... will I see them turn to brown and fall on the ground? Will I see next spring?

And I read so much bullshit about 'a better place'. Jesus Christ said, so I'm told, "The Kingdom of Heaven is HERE and NOW. It is inside of you and I." And such is my experience, I am glad to say.

You and I KNOW that there is Hell here on earth. And Heaven. "Thy will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven" SEE? EARTH IS IN HEAVEN. We can be there now. We DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL WE DIE TO GET THERE!!

An Indian Saint, Saint Tulsidas, spoke eloquently of the days in which you and I now live. The Kali Yuga, I believe it's called. "May you live in interesting times, the Chinese say. Tulsidas said, in this time, THE ANGELS THEMSELVES WILL BE QUEUEING UP FOR HUMAN BODIES"

MEN. BROTHERS. NOW is the time to live. To feel with YOUR SKIN the things you love. The dew on the morning grass with your bare feet. The texture of the hair of the dog by your side. The warmth of the sun on your skin. The unbelievable feeling of the breasts of the woman you love, who loves you, and holds you in her feminine Goddess Majesty.

Dying. Losing independence. Being in Pain. And Doubt.

These are things to fear, believe you me.

Time I stopped writing/ranting and got on with my BATTLE TO LIVE!

An Aloe enema, I think, before bed, to try to deal with this gut pain that's been bugging me since I woke up at fiveish this afternoon. The pain caused by the cancer cells I've been happily (and expensively!) murdering with mega doses of Vitamin C (50-100g at a time....)

So time to rid myself of some poison, get to bed (with my loving woman beside me!! Yay Hay!!) and get through another night of sweating out buckets of toxin, getting through three of four soaking tee shirts, to wake in the early hours, pain wracked, and drink a couple of pints of water, take twenty odd pills, have another enema, have a few hours of liberation, of joy, of happiness, of splendour. Of music. Of sunshine, maybe. Of Prayer. And for sure of LOVING. And wait...the Tiger will again stir. Someone said, "so you have good days and bad days, do you , Al?" "No," I answered . "I get a good few hours, then a bad few hours. Days? The Tiger's never that steady, that predictable."

But hey! Riding this bugger is sure BEING ALIVE! Can be a real thrill, sometimes... And I never forget that life is precious. That love is all.

So I leave you, In Joy. Excitement. Having started in anger, fear, and sorrow. How I do love free expression,

Time to say good night to you all,

Your lovin' Brother

Font Salada after thoughts

Thanks Paula for sending me so many pictures taken during our beautiful walk in Font Salada (17.04.2011). I have chosen the picture of the speech for this blog.

My Font Salada (after)-thoughts are as follows.

1. When we met a person with a brown Labrador, coming from the opposite direction, I stayed with dog and owner until all our friends and dogs had passed them.
Why?
When I see a person walking a dog on a tense lead in the campo, while the dog is showing me a head held high, a chest thrust forward, tail held high, eyes tensely focused and hackles up, I read that trouble is possible. I read that this dog is in charge, not the owner; this dog does not accept the protection of the human and does not show respect. Most people call such a dog "an agressive dog".
This is a mistake.
I call it a DEFENSIVE dog. He knows he has to defend the pack, as the human holding the tense lead is not doing this.
My question is: Why are so many friends in the Sunday morning walking group, still walking their dogs on a tense lead, allowing their dogs to pull them along?
If your dog is pulling (s)he is in charge. NOT YOU.
If you want to learn how to walk your dog on a slack lead, believe me, I can teach you.

2. Throwing a toy (it can be a plastic bottle) and expecting your dog to retrieve it, can be dangerous if other dogs are present. Toys do not exist in nature because in nature our dogs would never be bored.
What we call a toy is a PREY for a dog. Dominant dogs will protect their prey and this can lead to incidents if another dog wants to go for the same prey.
If you want to learn how to do retrieve exercises, believe me, I can teach you.

3. During the walk we met a family. The husband had to walk back because they had "lost"(?) a dog. This is a human interpretation. The dog was not lost.
This never happens in a natural pack.
According to me the dog thought the human was lost.
A dog does not stay with you, when you do not have developed the perfect team spirit of a natural pack. It means that you constantly pay more attention to the dog than the dog pays attention to you. If that is the case, you are not in charge. Your dog is. If the dog accepts and respects you as her/his pack leader, (s)he will not run away.
If you want to learn how to take charge of your pack, believe me, I can teach you.

4. The owner of the Font Salada bar had suggested we could leave the dogs in a pen.
I knew it would not work.
If you have not trained your dog to do long stays while other dogs are around, dogs will do everything that is possible to get to you.
This is what happened.
Do not think that is because these dogs love you so much.
That is the human way of thinking.
They want to be close to you because they consider you to be their submissive pups. They think they have to look after you.
Only when they trust you as their pack leader will they be able to do long stays.
If you want to learn that, believe me, I can teach you.

5. Offering food to a dog during or after the walk has to be avoided.
Do not reduce yourself to the position of a food dispenser. In nature a pack leader does not do this. Whatever happens in nature has to be our guideline. Mother Nature never makes mistakes.
Offering food to your dog during or after the walk (when we are having a drink) has already caused fights. Dominant dogs will protect their prey and food is prey. Dominant dogs might even protect their water bowl, if they feel that YOU are not offering that protection.
If you want to learn that, believe me, I can teach you.

6. During my speeches before we start walking, I stress that you are responsible for your dog during our walks.
The absolute minimum you need are commands like COME, SIT, STAY, DOWN, RUN (as a release command).
If you want to learn how to do that, believe me, I can teach you.

7. If you pick up the poo of your dog with a plactic bag that is excellent. But do not leave the small plastic bag on the parking lot for me to pick it up and bring it to a dustbin.
If you want to learn how to do that, believe me, I can teach you.

Bitch in heat

From Eva Schoenfeld in South Africa I received the following message:

A dog lover, whose dog was a female and "in heat', agreed to look after her neighbors male dog at her house while they were away on vacation. She had a large house however and believed that she could keep them apart.
As she was drifting off to sleep she heard awful howling and moaning sounds. She rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together, in obvious pain and unable to disengage as so frequently happens when they mate.

She was unable to separate them and perplexed as to what to do next. Although it was late, she called the vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the vet said. "Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and be able to withdraw."
"Do you think that will work?" she asked.

"It just worked for me" he replied.

Wailing lamb.

This morning I was overwhelmed by sadness.
For our usual early morning I walk with the dogs to the coral in the woods where our landlord keeps his goats and sheep. Sometimes I bring the animals only leftovers from the kitchen, but many times I also take along a bag of freshly cut grass.
I love it to feed these beautiful animals and to observe how the big billy goat keeps everything well-organized. In springtime it is pure joy for me to admire the energy of the lambs and to see how they keep close to their mothers. Having fed them, I then continue the walk filled with happiness.
But,today my heart was suddenly filled with sadness.
I saw how "un labrador"(a farm hand)grabbed a lamb, tied its legs together and took it along. The panick-stricken lamb cried like a human baby and its voice filled the whole valley with a wailing sound.
George Bernard Shaw has written somewhere that "as long we have slaughter houses, we will have battle fields."
I believe this.
For a lunch at the Font Salada in Oliva, all the friends walking with dogs want to eat meat. Except two persons.
I am one of them.
Over the last 35 years I have not eaten one morsel of meat.
I did other things though.
I will give you some examples, not because I want to boast but just to say it is my conviction that I do not need meat in order to stay in good physical, mental and emotional condition.
I ran thousands of km every year untill I reached the age of 50.
I competed in races untill I turned 51.
I ran a marathon in 3 hrs and 52 minutes.
I cycled thousands of km every year and one day I did 256 km in one go.
I practiced rock climbing with my son.
I climbed the Mont Blanc (4.808 m)in France.
I trekked through the Kali Gandaki in Nepal from Pokhara to Mukhtinat.
I participated in kayak marathon trips that took all day.
I am still a student of martial arts and a practitioner of Tai Chi, training five times per week week.
I do not have any health insurance except the (legal) Spanish Seguridad Social.
And yes I am still in fairly good condition.
Conclusion: Me personally,I do not need meat and I do not want meat.
Certainly not the meat from the supermarkets, the industrial meat from the multinational corporations that are destroying Mother Nature. That is meat from animals that were not allowed to have something that could come close to a decent life. The few months they have been alive in a concentration factory is spent in atrocious cicumstances, while their bodies were turned into chemical substances.
And NO, we do not see it when these animals are killed.
It is kept hidden from us.
I have the impression we have been brainwashed and conditioned to imagine that the meat we buy in the supermarkets has nothing to do with suffering animals.
One day I was the guest of honour during a fund raising dinner of a local charity with "para la protección de animales" in its name.
Seeing that sausages and steaks were being served I asked the president if she was also raising funds for the protection of these animals that gave their lives for the meal.
I could see that all of a sudden I became a lot less popular in the eyes of this well-meaning lady.
But according to me, the dinner was a good example of the schizophrenia regarding animals in our society.
On the one hand we spoil some (mostly cats and dogs)to death and on the other hand we are torturing, killing and eating the billions of suffering animals of the meat industry.
By the way, right now while you are reading this, they are suffering more than ever before.
Well, having written this, maybe I will be less popular in the dog walking world.
So be it.
I accept.

Kindest regards from Bruno

Mountain Bikers

Dearest friends walking with dogs,

Four years ago I started writing my weekly letters. They now are being send and read all over the world.
Last year a young Spanish friend called Pedro, showed me how to make a blog. That is how I started writing on my walking blog and on my natural minerals blog. I even started a Spanish blog about Martial Arts.
It rarely happens that anyone takes the initiative to write to me. You can imagine how pleased I am to see that Sue wants to participate in this blog. As far as I understand, that is what a blog is all about. It is not supposed to be a one-way street. Here come the comments of Sue regarding the consequences of the Mountain Bike Race in Campell.
For the other 141 persons on this list, I have to explain that we did not walk at all, because all over the caminos and the sendas(=tracks)there were hundreds of mountain bikers racing against the clock.
We left the cars close to the Font del Gel (In Valenciano "the spring with the cool water") and walked with our dogs on leash to our favourite Bar-Restaurant called La Bruixa (In Valenciano=witch).
Personally I very much enjoyed spending a few hours with friends in the beautiful surroundings of the Vall de Laguar valley.

Some friends did not follow me to the bar and two of them were Sue and Elaine. Here comes what Sue wrote:

hi Bruno

Well today was a disaster! Elaine said we should take our dogs for a walk anyway. This walk turned into a ramble! The path disappeared & we ended up climbing up barancos, through brambles & over trees. The dogs may have enjoyed it but i have the scars to prove i didnt! Luckily whilst stuck in the middle of a thorny bush we heard voices & 2 spanish women were having a picnic & Heidi with her usual nose for food led us up through the undergrowth to a path which lead us back to opposite where we parked, perfect............. then we got lost driving back & ended up in Orba!
Hope you enjoyed your walk
See you next week & dont forget your swimming clothes.
Sue

Seems that we are going from one font to another as this coming Sunday 17.04.2011 we will meet ye'all in La Font Salada in Oliva. Did you book already your lunch with Jeni?

Observe your dog, learn from your dog and offer your dog calm-assertive energy.

Dog kills cat

Sue did send me a rather sad story about one of her rescue dogs.

Hi Bruno
I love this story of yours. This is mine:

(Sue refers to my story about how I taught my Labrador in one week that the cats were and are members of my pack. It seems that I still can teach some people something about how to educate a dog.)

When Billy, one of my rescue dogs, came to live with us it was evident that he did not like cats. I had 2 cats which would sleep indoors at night but were outside in the day. I also fed 5 cats on top of my wall. Billy is a hunter & often catches rabbits, birds etc so we watched him with the cats. The cats seemed to sense that this dog was different from my other 2 dogs so kept their distance.
Last summer when I was away Billy killed the 2 house cats, this was 15 months after him moving in. My husband witnessed one of the killings & it was so quick that before he could shout Billy's name the cat was dead. No more house cats for us. I still feed 3 cats but on my neighbours wall & not on ours!

See you tomorrow
Sue

My comments

This is not a funny story. Certainly not from the cat's point of view.
It is my personal opinion that whoever takes care of a dog has an obligation to educate the dog. Education is only possible when the carer understands the dog and the dog understands the carer. Therefore the carer must learn to correctly interpret the body language of the dog. Education is only possible when the carer treats the dog as a dog and not as a human being. What we are aiming at is that we assume the position of pack leader and we make it clear to the dog(s) that in our pack there are rules, limitations and obligations. One of the rules in my pack is that the dogs accept the cats as members of the pack. The result is a life of harmony and mutual understanding.
I am always willing to teach whoever wants to learn.

Kindest regards from Bruno
