Lab-mix looking for a family

Dear Bruno,

Please find attached to this message a photograph of our dog MAX.
Max is 5 years old and we have had him since he was puppy. He is used to be on his own for longer periods while guarding the house. He likes to be with people, specially children. He is used to have companions like a rabbit, a turtle and a ferret. The only problem is that Max doesn't like cats !
As Max has Leishmaniosis we give him every day some Zyloric pills. Otherwise he is doing fine and in good health.
We are looking for a good home with a nice family for Max, ideally with a garden or enough space where he can spend time outside.
It would be great if my children could visit him when they are on holiday in Spain.
I am still here for the next 2-3 weeks. Thereafter I move to Geneva so by that time I need to find a home for Max. Maybe you know somebody or you can help us to find somebody.

Thanks in advance.

Today it is Earth Overshoot Day

Based on a concept devised by UK-based new economics foundation, Earth Overshoot Day helps conceptualize the degree to which we are over-budget in our use of nature. While meant as an estimate more than an exact date, Earth Overshoot Day helps conceptualize the size of the gap between a sustainable level of ecological demand and how much is currently required to support human activities globally.

Everything we are going to consume between today and 31.12.2011 will not be replaced by our Mother Earth. All the pollution we produce between today and 31.12.2011 will not be absorbed by Mother Earth.

It literally means we are committing suicide and we are making the life of our children and grandchildren even more unsustainable.

Do not wait.
If we go on living like we do it we need 5 planets like Mother Earth and (you might know this) there is only ONE:

Start today.

There are so many easy things to do : Buy a bicycle, grow your own vegetables, stop eating meat at least most of the time, buy organic food, use public transport, sell one of your cars, put on a jersey instead of burning more fossil fuel, talk to your family, your friends, your neighbours, walk your dog instead of watching the telly.
I think it is one of the reasons dogs are so intelligent: They do not watch the telly.

Not all heroes are people

NOT ALL HEROS ARE PEOPLE - MEANING OF SELF LESS LOVE

"James Crane worked on the 101st floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center .. He is blind so he has a golden retriever named Daisy.

After the plane hit 20 stories below, James knew that he was doomed, so he let Daisy go, out of an act of love. She darted away into the darkened hallway.

Choking on the fumes of the jet fuel and the smoke James was just waiting to die. About 30 minutes later, Daisy comes back along with James' boss, who Daisy just happened to pick up on floor 112

On her first run of the building, she leads James, James' boss, and about 300 more people out of the doomed building.

But she wasn't through yet, she knew there were others who were trapped. So, highly against James' wishes she ran back in the building.

On her second run, she saved 392 lives. Again she went back in. During this run, the building collapses. James hears about this and falls on his knees into tears.

Against all known odds, Daisy makes it out alive, but this time she is carried by a firefighter. "She led us right to the people, before she got injured" the fireman explained.

Her final run saved another 273 lives. She suffered acute smoke inhalation, severe burns on all four paws, and a broken leg, but she saved 967 lives. Daisy is the first civilian Canine to win the Medal of Honor of New York City.

I hope you enjoyed this story. I thought it was terrific.
Pass it on to all animal lovers ... Remember love is to be shared to be multiplied".

Brian.

Thank you Brian for sending me this story about the Golden Retriever who saved so many lives after the 9/11 attack.

A friend like Henry

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. These signs all begin before a child is three years old. (from Wikipedia)

Nuala Gradner wrote a book called "A friend like Henry. The remarkable true story of an autistic boy and the dog that unlocked his world."

Her son Dale was born in 1988 at a time when not a lot was known about autism. Sometimes it was even said that it was all the fault of emotionally unbalanced mothers. Nuala has been fighting an epic struggle as she was confronted by a lack of help, comprehension and money while she was trying to get in touch with her son. At times she felt so completely lost she even considered killing herself. But where humans did not succeed, a dog did. A Golden Retriever called Henry could get through to a terribly frightened Dale. In the end it was even possible to communicate with Dale by making him think it was Henry who talked to him.

More than 20 years later we know a lot more about autism en the enormously positive influence dogs (and animals in general) can have on all sorts of our ailments.
And by Jove, do we have ailments! Look at what animals are doing for us, while we go on torturing billions of animals in the meat industry. A meat industry that is not only destroying the last bits of our Rain Forest but that is also condemning hundreds of millions of persons to a permanent state of obesity.

So, thank you for inviting me to a barbecue that is being organized by an animal protection society. I will not be there. I love animals. I do not eat them.

Where is he?

Dear friends,

There is a Flemish saying I learned as a boy in my home town Antwerpen.

It goes like this: Een zoekende meeuw vindt altijd wat.

Translation in English. "A seagull looking for food will always find something to eat".

I invite you to click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7XpWW8SB38&feature=share

and find the oldest guy in this group of Spanish seagulls.

Love

Dogdoors in Philadelphia

Dear friends walking with dogs,

Reading an article from Dr. Becker (from the Dr. Mercola website) it struck me that some people can have really good ideas.
In a suburb of Philadelphia (USA) there is a row of six houses with gardens. All the inhabitants have dogs. As all these neighbours are going to work each day, their dogs were left alone. We all know that canines are not made to be left alone. In a pack most of the time they would stay together.
The Philadelphians found an excellent solution: Dogdoors have been installed in all the fences and now all dogs can get in touch with each other all day, while their carers have gone to work. Instead of frantically barking at each other the dogs are now interacting and cavorting, just as if they are living in a pack.

Alcalali

My dogs are not in a very good shape and temperatures are still quite high. Therefore I will walk in Alcalali this coming Sunday, where I will take you along for a short walk in an area where you have never been.
I will wait for you in the bar of the Centre Civic, which is the building with the palm trees you see right in from of you when arriving in Alcalali, coming from the Jalón direction.
Last week in Benimeli it was so hot we decided to start walking at 20.30 after a first drink in the church square.
This coming Sunday we will be flexible too, but I will be at the bar of the Civic Centre at 19.30.

See you there.

Shadowwork

Since I was initiated as a New Warrior in 2006 I have been working with my shadow. In the ManKindProject we are learning how to work with everything we repress, negate and hide, in order to become emotionally mature men.
In the past I have been writing about warrior energy and about warriors and their dogs. In the brain washing media we usually are being confronted with the shadow side of the brutal, violent, destructive warrior energy.
This time I invite you read a magnificent piece about the movie called The King's Speech where we can see a very good example of the golden side of warrior energy.

Just click on: http://www.shadowwork.com/kingsspeech.html

We are negotiating with the Town Halls at the moment and we are hoping they will donate some land to our charity to enable us to build the shelter.

We have been very busy raising funds to build this shelter, one of the main events was a Fun Day and Dog Show held at La Solana Boarding Kennels in Jalon, where we raised over 1200 euros that day.

We are looking for any support that you can give us to keep the money coming in. For instance if you would like to become a member of AKIRA this is 20 euros per annum. You will then be kept upto date on all progress of AKIRA SHELTER project and also all future events.

Dogs in the English language

Ever heard about red herrings? Or about white elephants? Or about black sheep?

OK.Fine.

But do you know anything about shaggy dogs?
A shaggy dog story is a story of unconvincing origin, not necessarily to be believed. The origin goes back to a story from the 1800s when a wealthy gentleman lost his beloved dog. The man was heartbroken and advertised extensively in The Times for the return of his valuable companion. An American in New York heard about the story, searched for a pet matching the description, went to London and presented himself at the palatial mansion. A po-faced butler looked down at the dog, bowed, winced and then exclaimed:"But not as shaggy as that ,sir!" (That in itself is a shaggy dog story).

If we are having a dog day or a dog day afternoon, then it is very hot, making us feel lazy and unable to exert ourselves in any way. We can trace the expression to the Romans and the days they called the Canicularis Dies, between 3 July and 11 August, when the dog star Sirius rises at the same time as the sun. According to the Romans these were the hottest days of the year.
Doggone is a favoured term from the American Bible Belt, used to express surprise and as an euphemistic alternative to "God damn it". It derives from one of William Carleton's Farm Ballads (1873) where he used the verse..."They sang about the doggonest thing, a body ever heard".

A dog in a mangeris someone who is not prepared to allow others to benefit from something that they themselves cannot use. The phrase relates to one of Aesop's fables, which tells us a tale about an ox and a dog who were stabled together for the night. Both were starving hungry and the only food available was the hay in the manger. Dogs do not eat hay but the ox was happily tucking in, until the jealous hound began snapping and biting at him. The dog sat in the manger and would not allow the ox to eat, preferring instead to deprive his friend of the hay.

You may find yourself in the doghouse if you are not careful. The expression is applied to a husband/male partner who is unable to behave himself and is held in disgrace. The source of this expression is found in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and the character Mr Darling, who is made to live in the dog kennel by his wife.

A dog in the night-time is a phrase we might use to describe someone who has unwittingly involved themselves in a crime. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle invented the dog in question when he published the Sherlock Holmes adventure "Silver Blaze" in 1892. In the story, the family dog would not bark during the night when horses were being stolen from the stable, because he knew the thief.

Expressions in all the languages I know have always fascinated me. If you want to know more about expressions in the English language buy a copy of the book titled "Red Herrings and White Elephants" or the second book called "Shaggy Dogs and Black Sheep", both by Albert Jack.

BENIMELI

Over the last few weeks we have had quite a few dog days. Slowly the temperatures are coming down. I nevertheless prefer to walk once more in the evening instead of in the morning. My oldies are very glad I do this, as we could see last Sunday evening. I do not want to turn them into shaggy dogs.
This coming Sunday 11.09.2011 I will walk in Benimeli.I will wait for you at the bar in front of the church till 19.30. As you can see, we will start an hour earlier than last Sunday.

See you there.
